At the explosion crater created by the 1888 eruption, the internal structure of the volcano is clearly visible, particularly the alternating layers of volcanic breccia and lava that form Mount Bandai. Near the summit of the mountain, there were once three hot spring resorts—Kaminoyu, Nakanoyu, and Shimonoyu—but they were almost completely destroyed by the 1888 eruption. The current ruins of Nakanoyu are from the hot spring that was relocated southward after the eruption.

At the center of the explosion crater lies Akanuma Pond. Even today, fumaroles can be seen on the southern side of the pond, serving as a reminder that Mount Bandai is an active volcano. As its name suggests, the pond has a reddish-brown color due to its high iron content. Because of its strong acidity, fish cannot survive in the water.
