Located on the northern shore of Hibara Lake, the area known as “Hibara” was a post town along the old Yonezawa Highway, which flourished from the late 15th century.

However, the eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888 submerged the town beneath the lake. During periods of drought, the torii gate and the approach to Oyama Tsumi Shrine reemerge from the lakebed.

Additionally, along this old Yonezawa Highway, geological layers that form the foundation of the Bandai Volcano from approximately 13 million years ago are exposed. These layers contain fossilized shells and submarine volcanic deposits, providing evidence that this region was once beneath the sea.
