The Geology and Nature of Over 300 Lakes and Ponds Formed by Landslides and Natural Dams
The eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888 caused a massive collapse on its northern side, damming rivers and creating a group of over 300 lakes and ponds. Among them are Lake Hibara, Lake Onogawa, Lake Akimoto, Lake Sohara, and the famous Goshikinuma (Five Colored Ponds). Today, this area serves as the central part of Bandai-Asahi National Park.
Additionally, the landslide triggered by the eruption formed numerous small hills, known as “Nagareyama” (flow hills). A cross-section of these formations can be observed at the exposed outcrop behind the 3D World exhibit of the Mount Bandai Eruption Memorial Hall.
