The Terminal Area of the Mudflow from the 1888 (Meiji 21) Eruption of Mount Bandai
Akimoto Lake was formed in 1888 (Meiji 21) when a rock avalanche blocked the flow of water. Taking advantage of its water volume and high water level, a hydroelectric power plant was constructed. Additionally, there is a memorial monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in the mudflow caused by this eruption.
On the opposite bank of the Nagase River, there is a massive conglomerate rock that is believed to have been transported by an older rock avalanche from Mount Bandai. Locals have revered this rock as “Akaneko Daimyojin”.
