A Scenic Panoramic Landmark and Historic Sites on the Fan-Shaped Terrain of Mount Bandai Volcano
Tenkyo-dai, located on an elevated area at an altitude of 700 meters at the foot of Mount Bandai, was formed by lava that erupted approximately 30,000 years ago. This scenic spot offers breathtaking views, with the main peak of Mount Bandai in the background and Lake Inawashiro, the Minamiaizu region, and the Nasu mountain range stretching out in the distance. The site also features fault scarp formations created by the Kawageta Fault, along with exposed bread-crust volcanic bombs—fragments of magma that cooled and solidified midair during an eruption.
On the southern slopes of Mount Bandai, where volcanic alluvial fans are distributed, lies the historic Suriagehara Battlefield, where the Ashina and Date clans clashed in battle in 1589 (Tenshō 17). Scattered across this battlefield are historical landmarks, including the San-chu-hi Monument, which commemorates the loyalty of Ashina clan retainers, and remnants of pine-lined sections of the old Nihonmatsu Highway.
